Câu hỏi: Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
If you’re like many Americans, you’re probably consuming far more sugar than you realize. Much of this sugar comes in the form of high-fructose corn syrup, which the food industry began adding to virtually all processed foods in the 1970s. This was back when the consumption of fat was first linked to heart disease. With the best of intentions, the food industry reduces the fat content in many processed foods. Unfortunately, low-fat foods taste like cardboard, so the food industry added high fructose corn syrup to make them “tasty” once more. As a result, while the consumption of table sugar has gone down, the consumption of high-fructose corn syrup has skyrocketed. The problem is that research now links sugar consumption in any form to a host of health problems, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and even cancer. Some researchers are going so far as to label sugar “toxic.”
Recent studies at the University of California, Davis, show that when a person consumes too much sugar, the liver gets overloaded with fructose and converts some of it into fat. Some of that fat ends up in the bloodstream and helps generate an especially dangerous kind of cholesterol called small dense LDL. These LDL particles are known to lodge in blood vessels, form plaque, and cause heart attacks. In addition, sugar has become a major focus in cancer research, researchers are finding that sugar consumption causes a sudden spike in the hormone insulin, which can serve as a catalyst to fuel certain types of cancers, including those of the breasts and colon.
Think that you can satisfy your sweet tooth by consuming artificial sweeteners? Think again. A study of rats that were fed artificially sweetened food found that their metabolism slowed down, and they were triggered to consume more calories and gain more weight than rats fed sugar-sweetened food. Similarly, people who consume diet drinks regularly have a 200 percent increased risk of weight gain, a 36 percent increased risk of pre-diabetes or metabolic syndrome, and a 67 percent increased risk of diabetes.
What to do? An American Heart Association report recommends that men should consume no more than 150 calories of added sugars a day, and women should consume just 100 calories. That’s less than the amount in one can of soda.
